General Information
The Public Computing Center (PCC) at the Oswego Public Library is a grant-funded, FREE service available to anyone living or working in the Oswego County community. The PCC lab hosts a variety of computer and career skills classes (explore this website for more information) and open computer lab hours for individuals and small groups seeking free computer and career skills help. Our lab provides 10 computers for public use and an instructor to assist you with filling out forms online, creating resumes & cover letters, finding good information online, and creating & accessing online accounts.
Open Lab Hours:
Mondays 10 - 12 1-4:30
Tuesdays 12:00-1:00, 3:00-6:15 Wednesdays 10-4:00 Thursdays 12:00-1:00, 3:00-6:15 Fridays 10-noon, 1-4:00 Saturdays 12:00-1:00 and by appointment -- call ahead! If you arrive before the main library opens, please use the south entrance (adjoining the ramp next to the municipal lots) to access the lab.Courses are underway! Anyone can sign up for the FREE classes or suggest a future topic by phone or in person at the Oswego Public Library main desk: 120 E. Second St., Oswego, NY 13126 or 315.341.5867. Space is limited to ten people in all classes (unless otherwise noted) on a first-come, first-served basis.
Looking for a job? Want to brush up on your skills? The Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County hold a Job Skills workshop series on select Tuesday & Wednesday afternoons at the Oswego Public Library . Topics will include matching your skills to potential jobs, communication skills, and searching for jobs. Call LVOC at 315.342.8839 to sign up.
Job Club, on Mondays 1:30-4:30 pm , the Job Club is a support group group for job seekers. The Job Club continues throughout the Fall as long as there are participants. Topics include getting support from other job seekers, overcoming the obstacles to getting a job, resumes, cover letters, online job applications, where to look for jobs, and practice interviews. Club members learn to use use JobNow, a new interactive online tool for help with writing, editing, and improving resumes and cover letters. Call 341-5867 to enroll or stop by the main desk in the library. Introduction to Computers, our basic computer skills class, is held every month at a different time of day, from 10 a.m. to noon or from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. or from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This basic skills course, which was developed through a partnership with the Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, is designed for adults of all ages. The course begins by introducing students to the parts of the computer. Lessons include instruction and hands-on practice on many topics, including turning the computer on and off; using the mouse; using a word processor to type, save, print, and share information; and a look at the internet. Since the class is taught as a series, students should plan to attend all 8 sessions of their course. Call 341-5867 to enroll.
Closer to Hannibal? Call the Hannibal FreeLibrary at 564-5471. An Oswego PCC instructor will offer this course, on a rotating basis, Wednesday mornings in Hannibal. Would you like to surf the internet more effectively? Want to connect with friends and family or fill out a form online? Join our Internet Basics course. In Internet Basics, we start by talking about what the internet is and how to connect to it. Other topics include creating favorites and changing your browser's homepage, filling out forms online, using a search engine, keeping your personal information safe and private, organizing your email, sharing photos and files, and more. Since the class is taught as a series, students should plan to attend all sessions of their course. Call 341-5867 to enroll.
The PCC, funded through a grant filed by the New York State Library Development, a unit of the NYS Education Department, is part of the Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Broadband Technology Opportunity Program. This grant, a total of $244,517 received over 2 year period, will allow the Oswego Public Library to establish one of 30 state-of-the-art computer centers in New York State designed to increase public access to high speed broadband services. |
